New Zealand, though larger than Great Britain in terms of landmass, is a tiny country by comparison in terms of population, economic productivity, cultural history, and public perception.
The one thing New Zealand doesn't lack is natural beauty. Wherever you go, the country practically assaults you with its gorgeous beaches, its magnificent vistas, its stunning landscapes and variety of plants and wildlife. During the high season, tourists outnumber residents as much as 34-1 in some areas. And the people there are so friendly and outgoing that you have to wonder what's in the water.
Wherever you're from, whatever the politics or troubles of your native land, to New Zealanders--or kiwis, as they're called--you're friends. None of the rest matters. It is, as they say, all good.
Milford Sound, in addition to being a designated World Heritage Site by the United Nations, is one of the world's top tourism destinations. During a recent vacation, I got to see why. My pilot, Antony Sproull, said he has to pinch himself sometimes when he realizes he gets paid to fly over such a magnificent landscape. You can see why here:
